About the Pocono Armchair Review

The Pocono Armchair Review (PAR) was conceived on the spur of the moment by the editors, after a leisurely good meal and some peace and quiet. They fell asleep and, amazingly, had the exact same dream. They dreamed of starting an outlet for the best writing and art they could find, as much as to hobnob with wonderfully creative thinkers as to publish a journal. In their dream, the journal met unexpectedly great success and became well known throughout the world. They then fell 100 feet, and woke up immediately on impact.

"One of our reasons for attempting this experiment is to provide, not just a venue for story telling and momentary distraction, but a place to explore some of the different aspects of life that have deeper meaning. We may not always accomplish that, but it's our goal. Hopefully, our stories and essays will give you something to think about, and maybe enrich your life. That's a lofty ideal. We'll do our best to try to achieve it. Sometimes, though, we'll be happy with just a clever yarn.

"You'll notice that the design of our journal is very plain. That's because we want you to focus on the stories and the art, rather than the glow-in-the-dark typography. Besides--with so many canned templates that feature color explosions and 92 different fonts--websites, magazines, and almost everything printed look the same: busy. We're going to stay sedately no-frills, for now. We think it's easier on the eyes. A little less headachy. A little less ADD. You know, the way things were before bug spray became part of our diet, and doctors started injecting kids with mercury.

"PAR will be distributed electronically as Adobe Acrobat PDF's, sent to your e-mail box. We don't plan to post stories forever on our website. That's to protect the authors. At most, we may put up an excerpt, to entice readers to subscribe or to buy individual issues."

Profits from PAR will be used to support Douglas Acres, a Pennsylvania non-profit corporation devoted to providing long-term care to severely autistic adults.

Special Note from the Editors:

We started the journal with the intention of making it a non-profit literary magazine.  However, we wanted to also host essays on political subjects, and to go so far as to talk about our candidate preferences.  We found out we can't do that.  We would not be able to maintain non-profit status, where donors could deduct their donations to us, if we started getting politically active.  So, we organized as a for-profit entity, with all profits going towards Douglas Acres, which is a Pennsylvania non-profit corporation intended to create a long-term care facility for severely autistic adults.  This way, PAR can retain its political independence, and still direct its profits towards non-profit goals.

As with most such ventures, this is a labor of love for us, and we'd appreciate your patience, understanding, and support. Thanks.
